Essential Agreements We have talked about what we need from each other to have a happy time in Preschool. The children came up with these agreements:
We began our phonics program this week with the letter sound 'Ss'. The children coloured in a letter s to look like something starting with the 'ss' sound, such as a snake. We also made 'seascape' paper plates with sharks, shells, starfish and seahorses. Family photos As part of our 'who we are' unit, we are displaying our family photos. We have made photo frames for them to go in. Please send me a photo of your family if you haven't yet! How We Express Ourselves Through Play
In order to explore the question, "What is Play?", we took the children to some different areas of the school and observed what they did there. It was fascinating to see how their play developed, or whether they even saw it as play! Who We Are To start the school year, we have tuned into our Unit of Inquiry, Who We Are. We have started by looking at ourselves and what makes us unique. We have drawn self-portraits. We have talked about how old we are, whether we are boys or girls, what food we like, what our favourite activities at Preschool are, and what our favourite colours are. We created posters to share all this information. Our Birthday Tree We have made a birthday tree to show when our birthdays are throughout the year. First we used leaves under the paper and rubbed on top with crayon to make the pattern of the leaves. Then we found our name, the month of the year we were born and the date, and stuck them to the leaves. Finally we put them on the wall to make a tree. Grade 3N is the buddy class for Preschool O and Preschool H. They will visit us every Tuesday afternoon. This Tuesday they came and we showed them the toys we liked to play with. We all enjoyed their visit and look forward to our relationships developing. Nyla's birthday It was Nyla's birthday in July, and we celebrated it on Tuesday. We made a card for her and Nyla's dad came in and shared with us some lovely photos of Nyla growing up. Then we all sang Happy Birthday and had a yummy cake. Happy Birthday Nyla! Our birthday celebrations are an important highlight of our year. They also relate to our unit on Who We Are, and we take this opportunity to reflect on how we have grown and changed. Mathematics Our mathematics focus has been counting and matching numbers 1-10. Here we are playing a counting and matching game. Cooking We made Gingerbread Cookies on Friday. We measured the ingredients into the bowl and mixed them to make a dough. Then we used the rolling pin to roll them flat and cookie-cutters to cut them into shapes. We put them in the oven to cook and then we ate them. Yum! Did you get to try one too? We hope you liked them! This week, we are planning to make something starting with 'S'. We have talked about soup and sushi. Would you like to help us this Friday? We had a wonderful first week meeting many new friends and teachers. We look forward to sharing our inquiries with you on this page. Baking Buns
Most weeks on Friday we will be doing some cooking. This week we made a bread dough and baked buns! We measured the ingredients, mixed the dough, let it rise and then kneaded our buns while we sung baking songs. We were using maths, literacy and developing our fine motor skills. We ate our buns with butter and honey. Our cooking will often relate to our 'letter of the week' and the children will help to choose what we make. Thank you to Queenie for offering to help with our baking sessions. If you would like to help too, please let me know. |
