Phonics in Preschool
When teaching phonics in Preschool, we focus more on the sound that each letter makes. A program called Jolly Phonics is used as a resource to support us in teaching phonics. We introduce children to one new letter/sound each week. You will notice that the letters have not been introduced in alphabetical order. The first group (s,a,t,i,p,n) has been chosen because they make more simple three-letter words than any other six letters. The letters b and d are introduced in different groups to avoid confusion.
Please see the order below:
Set 1: s,a,t,i,p,n
Set 2: c,k,e,h,r,m,d
Set 3: g,o,u,l,f,b
Set 4, j,z,w,v,y,x,q
Below is a link to the Jolly Phonics songs which you may like to listen to with your child. You can encourage them to sing along and copy the action for each sound.
